Donnell “D. Floyd” Floyd, honoree

Donnell Floyd was born and raised in the Washington, DC Metropolitan area. Although he’s played the saxophone since the fourth grade, he didn’t fall in love with it until the 10th grade when he started attending the Duke Ellington School of the Arts. That is also when he joined the infamous Go-Go band Rare Essence (RE). Floyd performed with RE for almost two decades spanning from 1983 to 2001. Floyd recorded songs with such greats as Doug E. Press Release: Go-Go Percussion Legend Go Go Mickey is moving from Rare Essence to Familiar Faces

For Immediate Release
October 13, 2012

On October 18th, Familiar Faces will welcome the  most recognizable name in the infamous percussion pocket of DC’s homegrown Go-Go music from Rare Essence, as Milton “Go Go Mickey” Freeman changes teams and joins his former colleagues Donnell Floyd, Ms. Kim, Derek “DP” Paige and Eric “Bojack” Butler (all former Rare Essence members) in Familiar Faces.

“There’s a cat named Mickey from out of town” begins the Rare Essence hit song, “Go Go Mickey,” a remake of Smokey Robinson and the Miracles “Mickey’s Monkey” that immortalized RE’s percussionist Go Go Mickey.  Freeman has become a DC Go-Go legend and is known for his fast hands on congas and for his raw beats that have become a staple for many area conga players...

I could do the Brown & White dance with the best of them, maybe not with a horn in tow as Donnell and DP often did but I couldn’t wait for the breakdown so that I could watch the guys get it in...

Familiar Faces is back. After a little more than a year performing with Rare Essence, Donnell Floyd has brought back Familiar Faces with a new lineup of some of go-go’s best musicians. The return show is schedule for November 10 at Ibiza nightclub.

It was Rare Essence that made D.Floyd one of the legends of go-go. He was one of the key members of RE’s front line in the 80s and 90s, helping to make RE the band that was always at the top of the go-go scene. He wrote some of the absolute classics RE songs including “Lock It.” He left the band in 2000 to form 911 which became Familiar Faces.

Familiar Faces had success on the “Grown and Sexy” circuit for a decade with a variety of personnel...
